Meet 16-year-old Jhyre Alvarado who started a new chapter at Palisades Charter High School! This is our first 1girl chapter in Los Angeles, California, as well as our first high school chapter, and we couldn’t be more excited that Jhyre has decided to take charge with it!
Jhyre holds many leadership roles through school and her community. She is currently serving as the academic chair for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the head coordinator for her schools Academic Achievement after school tutoring program, a youth board member for the Foster and Banks A Walk in Faith Foundation, and president of her school’s Igniting Faith Christian Club. She is also involved in the Black Student Union, Latino Student Union, Student Leaders Committee, and has participated in a student panel for the White House Initiative for Educational Excellence of African Americans.
Jhyre has always liked working with younger generations from disadvantaged areas, so she saw 1girl as the perfect opportunity to serve her community. She hopes that the young girls she supports through 1girl will look back at the experience and want to help the next generation of girls and to keep the cycle going of creating great leaders. Jhyre started the club at her high school to ensure that there will always be volunteers to help with the 1girl program.
After high school, Jhyre wants to take a gap year before she starts her college experience at California State College. She wants to major in business and minor in engineering. In the gap year, Jhyre hopes to gain more volunteering experience and mentally prepare herself for the journey ahead. We can’t wait to see where Jhyre’s journey takes her and all the great things she will do in the future!
