Critical Thinking Is Critical For Girls

IMG_3385by Kris Crews

When it comes to achievement or taking steps to understand things better, critical thinking could not be more important. Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally. There is an objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment. This sounds like an important skill to have, right? Oddly enough, it has become a lost art and it hinders students, workers, and community members from reaching their potential and developing more skills.

Critical thinking requires you to use your ability to reason. It’s about being an active learner instead of a passive learner or recipient of information. Skillsyouneed.com wrote an article on critical thinking and they identified the skills that those with the critical thinking ability have. These skills are:

  1. Understand the links between ideas
  2. Determine the importance and relevance of arguments and ideas
  3. Recognize, build, and appraise arguments
  4. Approach problems in a consistent and systematic way
  5. Reflect on the justification of their own assumptions, beliefs, and values

In addition to the skills listed above, there are other skills that we need to be able to think critically. They are varied and include observation, analysis, evaluation, decision making, and interpretation. We need to be able to:

  1. Identify different arguments in relation to a specific issue
  2. Recognize weaknesses or negative points in the evidence of an argument
  3. Provide structured reasoning and support for an argument we wish to make or address

At 1girl, we believe that critical thinking is vital. Without it, the girls don’t challenge themselves to think outside the box or to take the time necessary to dissect a problem: finding contradictions in their ideas or ways to solve a problem. We continue to do activities with the girls that help them think logically and critically. It is important our girls are aware of these skills, and our goal is to help them understand why it matters, so they can help lead others to think critically.

Our girls have the potential to change the world; having strong critical thinking skills will give them the edge they need to build their dream.
