The Road to tax-exemption

The state and federal filing has taken us down a long road, but the end is in sight! We are excited to announce that our filing is in process and expect that it will be complete soon. We have just sent in our state filing forms and expect to have those back in 5-10 days with our charter from the state. Basically, this will give us legal status as a non-profit. From there, we will send in our Form 1023, which will take between two and three months to get back, assuming all goes well. If so, we will officially be tax-exempt with 501(c)3 status.

We cannot thank all of the people who have helped us along this way enough. It has been a lot of work, but we are finally one step closer to our goal. It has taken a while because of the challenges in finding affordable legal assistance, but we managed to find a great individual who was willing to do it for us and some amazing donors to help with the costs associated with filing. We could not have done it without all the support and guidance from everyone we have worked with.

Now that this barrier has (almost) been crossed, our next steps are to focus on fundraising and curriculum development. Once our tax-exempt status comes through, we will be eligible to apply for a number of grants, and we will also be able to tell donors (with full certainty) that their donations will be tax-exempt. Currently, all of our donations will most likely to be tax-exempt, as long as there are no problems with our paperwork, but we cannot guarantee it. Hopefully, being a tax-exempt non-profit will help a lot with our fundraising efforts!
